Weekend workshop Sat 30th April Sunday 1st May 2011......Start your winter wardrobe: Felted Winter Wrap Skirt

Lindy is travelling from WA to share her special creativity and knowledge of how to make felt simply and directly with us. Lindy is also offering a nuno wrap workshop on Monday and this is offered at a special price for you if you are attending the weekend workshop

In this workshop, LIndy will demonstrate how to make a heavy winter wrap-skirt with secure button clasp. Explore options for functional designs and make a totally unique garment that suits you and makes you feel good and cosy in the cooler months. There are many options for colour and design but the basic function stays the same. It fits, it's snug and it is the only one like it - your anchor winter garment. Lindy is also making a nuno felt wrap on Monday - a discount is offered to all those choosing to do the wrap skirt workshop.

Artist Profile

Lindy's artist profile:

I have been handmaking felt garments for the past 13 years. Being self taught initially until I discovered Feltwest Inc. which opened up a whole new world of feltmaking. I have attended workshops and been inspired by overseas tutors, Charlotte Buch (Denmark), Jorie Johnson (USA/Japan), Chad Alice Hagen (USA).

Inspirations for my designs come from nature and our multicultural and indigenous society. Most of my work is using 'Nuno' technique. 'Nuno' is a Japanese word for fabric. I incorporate vintage kimono pieces and antique scarves in my work. My work is always evolving. In the past four years I have been exploring hand-dyeing naturally, using Fungi and WA Native flora. Looking for local windfall, or verge clippings to use in my work. Its very exiciting when a length of silk is unwrapped with Eucalyptus leaves and flowers inside, never knowing how the leaves will react with the natural mordants. I insist upon using natural fibres, wool, silk, cotton, hemp. I am fascinated by the versatility and wearability of felt. The natural fibre keeping your body cool or warm, as needed. My designs are unique, one of pieces, no two pieces are the same.

I have taught feltmaking in my studio and at schools throughout the metropolitan area. I tutored' Felting for Wearable Surfaces' in 2009 at the TAFTA Geelong Fibre Forum, a live in workshop, for a week.

Materials - you will be provided with a heavy duty Australian made prefelt, that is suited to outer and heavier garments. This is available in black and undyed. If you prefer to make your garment and dye it after, Marion will be deonstrating this on the final day of the workshop at 3.30pm.

Bring any extra embellishments, wooltop, thread ands tools you like to use in your felt. Beginners can tackle this class, but you will need to be prepared to work on a little more at home in the evenings to keep pace with the workshop.

Basic felting requirements list will be emailed on booking.
