Special 5 day Workshop with India Flint

'Talisman Dress'

.....a dress created from precious fragments and orphaned treasures- a class for those who have experience in ecologically sustainable plant dyeing.

Natural Dye Symposium Natures Colours in the City

Talisman Dress Code IF09 $875.00 for the five days March 8-12th inclusive

Create a dress inspired by the amulets and talismans of history, embellished with collected treasures, beads, buttons, the stash of plant-dyed textile fragments you have collected over the years, kantha stitching and even partnerless earrings.

We’ll begin by dyeing a substantial length of silk using very simple ingredients - leaves, water and heat; using non-toxic pre-mordant techniques to add variation to the colour.

From the cloth we will form a dress influenced by the zero waste cutting techniques of traditional nomadic garments.

Throughout the week we will build on our garment, adding pockets [both obvious and secret], sewn detail and our personal treasures.

Participants may wish to bring botanical matter from their own gardens to colour their piece of cloth.

There will be instruction in and opportunity for thread dyeing. We will make stitch samplers on dyed textile fragments and build them into the garment. Each dress will reflect the personality of the maker as well as becoming a kind of personal amulet, something to be worn on special occasions or when needing protection.

At the end of the week, we hope you will agree to show your finished talisman dress in an exhibition at the Beautiful Silks Textile Gallery for the duration of the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival.

Things to bring:

A pre-loved garment to form the foundation of the bodice [if desired]

Your collection of partnerless earrings, special buttons, beads and trinkets
