Women’s Stitching Tales ~ Story Cloths

“Life is a journey, the destination is always the same: how you get there is your story.” Every cloth tells a story, the colours you choose, the marks you make, the marks it accrues over time all add to the memories and meanings it encodes. Choose a story that has meaning for you- perhaps your own, that of someone you admire or a fiction…spend a few moments, make a few notes before class [suggestions to follow on enrolment] and we will embark on this trail together.

Many cultures have used a flat surface to tell a whole story, think medieval tapestries [Read the fictional story created by Tracy Chevalier of how the Lady and the Unicorn Tapestries came to be and some of the meanings embedded into them for inspiration], Kantha quilts of India, Molas of South America, these are all good places to begin a little research to get you in the mood… Other places to set the mood Blog “Spirit Cloth” and the work of Jude Hill. The work of Dr Skye Morrison on the “Stitching Women’s’ Lives” Project The website- www.redthreadranis.com Our days will be set out with the mornings for active construction- cutting, perhaps machine stitching, discussion…. The afternoons will be in a quieter mode; a time to stitch by hand, contemplate what you are building into your work, discuss ideas and have a good old chat over a cup of tea whilst stitching.

Notes for preparations and requirements:

Grab yourself a notebook or journal -make a few notes or simple outline of the story you would like to focus on [let your hair down these note are for your eyes only, make them as simple or complex as you like]

Take a few minutes to re-read your story, then...

1. Using a sentence at most two sum up this story - catch the growth in it, the lesson learned..., the evolution.

2. What simple image or two would you use to symbolise this jouney [eg springtime might tie to childhood, auumn to reaping the fruits of your labours- let yourself be POETIC in the images you use rather than literal]

3.close your eyes, imagine you are dreaming; snuggled up in a soft, warm snuggle rug...just as you start to wake this story unfolds... what colours are the mists from which it unfolds? Which colours are the events and images cloaked in?

Bring to Class

1...... enthusiasm

2...... your journal with stories and thoughts

3...... perhaps some fabrics/ textiles/ small items associated with your story...simple ephemora

4.....sewing kit- needles for hansd stitching, range of threads in different weights and colours [fine crotchet cotton can be good] If you are inclined to machine embroidery you could bring your sewing machine NOTE the work of the hand is the focus of this workshop so machines are only for morning use.

We have available a kit it contains

1. wool pre-felts and fabrics to create the background, the first morning of the workshop will be spent using a very simple method felting the basic background which will become our canvas for our work.

2. fabrics for the surface of the 'canvas'

3. a dip in pile of wool and fabrics to find the right colours to suit your individual project
